As people age, they become aware of loose skin on the neck referred as a double chin or as a turkey wattle. Many men and women are interested in addressing this skin issue more than anything else, especially when one's neck shows the signs of aging more than the face.
Surgically, most men don’t care about the rest of their face. But a direct neck excision is the one surgery they will consider to get rid of loose skin.
Direct neck lift surgery enhances and tightens the neck by eliminating excess fat tissue. It gets rid of the dreaded double chin that makes a person quite self-conscious. A neck lift rejuvenates the neck area for a more attractive and youthful appearance.
Anyone in good physical health with excess skin underneath the chin and neck is a good candidate for a direct excision neck lift. Preferably, you do not smoke (or must stop at least four weeks prior to surgery). Patients with a more severe jowl or sagging of the cheek may benefit by having a facelift procedure.
Patients with a lax plastisma muscle, excess fat or skin are candidates for a neck lift Z-Plasty surgery, named after a vertical Z shaped incision made along the neck. An incision is made underneath the chin to remove the fat. The lax plastima muscle is then bound with sutures.
A Z-Plasty neck lift removes the excess skin and fat from the front of the neck closing the scar in a “Z” pattern. It can be performed on men and women but is the preferred choice for men trying to avoid a face/neck lift.
The direct neck excision and Z-Plasty under chin rid of a large fold of skin that is often referred to as a turkey wattle. The scar can be visible as it heals but fades over time, typically between four to six months. It is usually more tolerated by older men because a shirt can hide the incision. Women usually opt for a facelift and neck surgery with the incision hidden in their hairline.
Similar to the direct neck lift, you may experience mild to moderate pain with some swelling and bruising. You will need to wear a compression garment for healing purposes for several weeks. Avoid any strenuous activities for two weeks and any prolonged exposure to the sun.
A direct excision neck lift takes up to three hours under anesthesia. Some patients go home after the surgery; others stay overnight.
A direct neck lift deals with facial rejuvenation and skin laxity. The procedure combine cervicoplasty (removes extra skin) and platysmaplasty (tightens underlying muscles in the neck) to create an appealing and youthful look from your chin to your chest.
During a direct excision neck lift, the surgeon will sedate you with a local anesthesia and place an incision underneath your chin. That way, the scar can be hidden underneath. The surgeon then elevates the fat tissues and removes them (excision or liposuction). The platysma muscles are tightened and bound with sutures. The removal of excess skin gets rid of the double chin, or turkey wattle, appearance in your neck. The neck is covered by a bandage to complete the procedure.
As with any surgery, there are some risks involved, including anesthesia reaction, bleeding, infection and swelling.
Following your direct neck lift surgery, you may experience mild to moderate pain with some swelling and bruising. Your plastic surgeon can prescribe medications to alleviate pain.
Follow all instructions from your doctor, including not removing your bandage until told to change it, usually every 24 hours, or if it gets dirty or wet. Washing becomes an issue so make sure to follow your surgeon’s recommendation. You do not want the incisions to get too wet.
You will need to wear a compression garment for healing purposes for several weeks. Avoid any prolonged exposure to the sun and make sure to cover your bandage when you go outside.
Avoid any strenuous activities for at least two weeks. It will be important to only move your head and shoulders as one unit when turning and moving around and to sleep in an inclined position where your head is elevated for up to four weeks to reduce swelling. Patients return to work between two to four weeks following their surgery.
Your facial movement may be limited for a couple of weeks, especially if you laugh too much!
